How to Get the Most Out of Your Laptop Battery
There is no perfect science when it comes to predicting just how long the battery of your laptop will last. Most new laptop batteries claim to last hours on end, but after a year or two of use, the lifespan will reduce significantly. At that point, and especially with used computers, it is just too difficult to tell how long the battery will last. It really depends on what you are using the computer for and what types of functions it will be performing. There are a few things you can do to increase the performance of your battery.
To get the most out of your battery, you can attempt to recalibrate your computer by following the next couple of steps…
The first thing you need to do is click the start button on the bottom left corner of your desktop. Go to settings control panel and click on the display properties. Make sure that your screen saver is set to (none).
Next, click the power button in the same window and under power schemes, turn all of the options to (never). This should be applied on both sides of “Plugged in” and “Running on batteries”
Now go to the Alarms tab under the Power Options Properties and go ahead and turn both the alarms off or set them to 0%. Also make sure that the Alarm Action is set to No Action. You don’t want the computer to do anything when its battery life is running low. It will shut down obviously when it has no power left, and that’s exactly what we are aiming to do.
Now you can go ahead and put your computer on hibernate. Don’t shut it down completely, just do whatever it takes to put it into hibernate mode. In hibernate mode, charge the battery completely. Turn the computer back on and unplug it. Let it run the battery all the way down until it shuts off on its own. When it shuts off, you can then go ahead and charge it all the way back up and proceed to turn back on all of the power settings to the way you had them.
If you don’t notice any difference in the life of your battery, go ahead and repeat these steps, charging, discharging, and charging it again. Do this a good two to three more times to see if it makes any difference. If it does not, it may be time for a new battery or your laptop battery charger may be faulty. Even with a new battery, these steps should be taken at least once a month so that you can set your laptop battery to normal and so that you can get that absolute most out of your battery charge.
